The donation of medicines is complex due to regulations surrounding the storage, transportation, and distribution to ensure efficacy. Pharmaceutical and medical supply companies need assurance that their donated products arrive in the hands of the right clinician, in the right place and at the right time. While NGOs juggle differing reporting requirements involved in evidencing product use and distribution.
Tracking donations and ensuring compliance throughout is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the supply chain, which is otherwise vulnerable to being infiltrated by substandard or falsified medicines. With two decades of experience in navigating these challenges, International Health Partners knew the complexities acutely. The solution? A bespoke system to handle the complexities of medical product donations for all involved.
As an organisation sitting directly between pharmaceutical donors and international NGOs using donated products, we were uniquely positioned to understand best practices at all stages of the donation process. Designed to be fully integrated, streamlined and future-proof, Boaz is the software solution to manage the entire donation process.
Boaz is designed to ensure end-to-end traceability at all stages of the medical donation process. It is the centralised source for medicine donors and NGO partners to track and trace every step of the journey – interacting with the system independently. NGOs can share at any given time, where a product has been distributed in-country at a hospital or clinic level. No more complex spreadsheets or information loss through email chains; Boaz is the single source of truth for global product donation programmes.
The importance of traceability within the software system was highlighted recently when a client identified product being made available in a country which did not have the appropriate approvals. Without Boaz, it would have taken weeks to identify this error.
Through Boaz, they were able to quickly identify if the product had been donated, who it had been donated to, and where the product was at that moment in time. Boaz reduces the risk of human error.
• It is the single source of truth that monitors the end-to-end journey of a product from donor to recipient
• It logs all communications and records such as certificates and photos of safe arrival, which are stored in one accessible location
• It records deviations from the original donation, such as shipped vs. arrived, batch numbers and quantities
• It promotes Good Distribution Practice (GDP) during all steps of the supply chain
• It enables NGO partners to feedback on distribution and the number of beneficiaries
In Boaz, we are empowering the industry to do more good, offering a solution to the traditionally complicated and risky process of medical donations. The goal of the system is to improve the wider medical donation space through increasingly efficient and compliant processes, ensuring products can be donated safely and used effectively. It has been designed and built to implement GDP, furthering IHP’s aspiration to raise the standards of medical donations across the wider donations landscape.
In 2022 alone, IHP sent over ten times more treatments than before the Boaz system’s creation in 2019, and already this year, we have shipped over 2 million treatments worth £2.69m ($3.42m) to 15 counties, helping over 600,000 people worldwide.
Boaz is the only system of its kind specifically designed to manage the end-to-end, compliant process for product donation. It is helping to reduce the destruction of millions of medicines each year, supplying reports and impact stories to show the products reach their destination, all while fulfilling compliance regulations essential for pharmaceutical companies and patients.
Ultimately, Boaz empowers medicine donors to safely donate more products, to more patients; ensuring more people can access the healthcare they need.
